The century-old ‘go to’ procedure of fusing two or more vertebrae together as one should be a thing of the past. Controversial, perhaps. But Dr. Todd H. Lanman has seen thousands of patients who should never have had spinal fusion surgery.

Since the 1940s, if a patient had a disc herniation or other disorder that was unable to be relieved with physical therapy or pain management, spinal fusion was the answer. Federal Data reveals that since 1990, the number of spinal fusions performed in the US has risen to approximately 480,000 annually. Dr. Todd H. Lanman has spent years undertaking clinical research and analyzing patients to discover that more than half of these patients should never have been fused.

Through innovative, off-label use of Artificial Discs, we can now reverse fusion surgery to restore motion, helping to improve your quality of life, and get you moving again.

When patients present with pain, pinched nerves, neurological issues or prior fusions, we undertake extensive testing, scans and analysis to determine if Restorative Motion Surgery is the right fit. Together, we will address your motion goals, lifestyle and individual situation to ensure you meet the criteria for this life-changing surgery.

An increasing number of patients are now requesting fusion removal. How is this performed?

Spinal Fusion Surgery literally merges two or more vertebral levels together as one. Which, as you can imagine, leaves little to no flexibility or movement in the neck or spine. It’s considered a major surgery as rods and plates are screwed into the bones, with bone grafts installed to add strength to the fusion.

We see a number of patients who should never have had this surgery, and come to us to reverse the damaging effects with our leading Restorative Motion Surgery. We undertake a thorough examination, together with CT/MRI scans to determine the condition of the pre-existing fusion(s). If the patient is a good candidate for the procedure, we schedule surgery to remove the fusion and replace the damage with artificial discs. We have seen compelling results for people in almost any age group.

As an off-label procedure, Restorative Motion Surgery is not specifically approved by the FDA. Provisions for “off-label” use of artificial disc replacement opens a way for surgeons to customize treatment for unique patient situations. It has been successfully performed on patients who wish to avoid additional fusions by adding artificial discs to adjacent levels (above and below an existing fusion).
